Multi-tier Affiliate Programs

November 17th, 2006

Multi-tier affiliate programs distribute commissions into a hierarchical referral network of sign-ups and sub-affiliates. Thus this gives an opportunity to the affiliates to earn commission on multiple levels. In this form, the affiliates not only make money after a direct referral sale but also when a sale is closed by those affiliates who have been referred to by them in the multi tier program. So if publisher no 1 signs up an affiliate program with an advertiser; and he in turn makes publishers 2 and 3 sign up the same, he not only makes money when he makes a direct sale but also when publishers 2 and 3 make a sale. It is not necessary that in a multi tier program, the chain of publishers must know of each other, but it generates an income for the higher level signup.

What is an affiliate network?

November 17th, 2006

Affiliate network is a third party that provides such services as aggregation and tracking to the affiliates as well as the merchants. It comprises of a group of merchants and affiliates where the affiliates promote the products from the merchants in exchange of a commission. The merchant also gets an easy access to a wide network of affiliates. It is not necessary for an affiliate to generate a sale amount for one particular merchant but for the entire range of affiliates before getting the compensation. The affiliate network also has other advantages for both the affiliate merchant and affiliate.  An affiliate has much more trust in a network rather than an independent affiliate program. The merchants also pay an overall commission to the network. The commissions are based on pay-per-lead (PPL), pay-per-action (PPA) or cost-per-action (CPA), pay-per-sale (PPS) and pay-per-click models. The network then distributes the money among those affiliates who have made a sale.
